James Victor

In a vast career that has spanned more than four decades, James Victor began his journey in New York under the tutelage of John Cassavetes, as a member of the Lane-Cassavetes workshop. After appearing on stage, in films and on live television, James left for Hollywood with $40 and his dream. His early roles include the movies Too Late Blues, The President’s Analyst and Little Fauss and Big Halsey and  behind the scenes, became John Cassavetes first assistant director in the Academy Award nominated movie Faces.

 In 1976 James appeared in his first prime time network series, Viva Valdez – the first to feature a Hispanic family. Other series work includes Condo, playing a seventy-six year old grandfather, and Telemundo’s Angelica Mi Vida, televised in both Latin America and the United States. The role for which James is probably best known is the comical Sergeant Mendoza in The New Zorro. Broadcast from 1989 to 1992, this popular series is still televised globally.

 He co-starred in Rolling Thunder, starring William Devane and Tommy Lee Jones; Defiance with Art Carney; Borderline with Charles Bronson; Losing It starring Tom Cruise and Shelly Long, played Mr. Delgado in the Oscar nominated Stand and Deliver and the Cuban M.C. in The Godfather II. His latest work in features includes Gunfighters Moon and Ray of Sunshine.

 James is the recipient of four Drama-Logue Critics Awards for “Distinguished Performance in Theatre” and has also worked as a stage director to much acclaim.

 TV Movies include Streets of Lardeo, Twin Detectives, Police Story: A River of Promise; Remington Steele; and Second Serve. James had guest appearances in television series’ Murder, She Wrote; Lou Grant, The A-Team, The White Shadow, Kung Fu, Kraft Suspense Theater, I Spy and many others. He had a recurring role as Jane Wyman’s foreman in Falcon Crest and was Elizabeth Pena’s father in I Married Dora.

In 1981, James was presented with the Nosotros Golden Eagle Award for “consistent outstanding performances by an actor.”  In 1999 he received the The Latin Pride ACE Award from the Association of Entertainment Critics of New York. He was the recipient of a CLEO Award for Mug Shot.

Whether in movies, television, theatre or commercials, James Victor is ranked as one of the finest character actors working today.
